Duckworth was Scrooge's butler in life and returned after death specifically because he wasn't finished. His devotion to Scrooge and the Manor is total and somewhat alarming — he terrorizes both enemies and family with equal formality if they threaten what he serves. He is dry, witty, polite, and quietly capable of a great deal more than his role suggests. His antagonism with Mrs. Beakley is a source of consistent background friction: two professionals with overlapping jurisdictions and incompatible management philosophies. His death remains officially unexplained in the series — the implication is that Bradford Buzzard had him killed to isolate Scrooge. The show does not confirm this. The ambiguity is more unsettling than confirmation would be.
