Doofus Drake in the 2017 series is the inverse of his 1987 counterpart: rather than being a sweet, slightly clumsy friend of the triplets, he is a monstrous inheritance story. His grandmother left him her fortune. The fortune, with no adults able to say no, turned him into something genuinely unsettling. He treats his own parents as butler and housemaid. He has no qualms about destroying priceless objects for amusement. He regards other people as property. He is deliberately framed as Louie's dark reflection — a kid who loves money, who sees angles, who would be charming in different circumstances — and the contrast asks what the difference is. The answer the show gives is: family. Louie has people who tell him no and mean it, who he would fight for. Doofus has none of that, and the absence shows. He is not allowed within 500 feet of a kangaroo for reasons the show declines to fully explain.
