The 2017 series handles Darkwing Duck cleverly: he's a fictional character first, a childhood inspiration for Launchpad, a washed-up TV actor's legacy. Then Drake Mallard — the actor's stunt double, a nobody — takes up the real mantle and the show asks what it means to become the thing you're pretending to be. Drake has nothing except conviction and an embarrassing catchphrase that he has made into a sincere philosophy. He is not as skilled as he thinks. He is braver than he knows. His sidekick Launchpad believes in him completely and that belief turns out to matter. His heroism is specifically comedic: he always needs a shorter intro, the big speech lands wrong, the entrance causes structural damage. But the comedic frame doesn't undercut the genuine arc — he earns the cape. The show says so without fanfare.
