Card Kingdom

Location from Deltarune by Toby Fox

Chapter 1's Dark World — a realm of playing cards, chess pieces, and dungeons, ruled by a king with a cracked heart and patrolled by a jester who thinks reality is a joke.

The Card Kingdom is the first Dark World the heroes enter, formed from the unused items in the school's supply closet — board games, playing cards, chess sets. Its inhabitants are Darkners shaped by these objects: cards who serve the King, chess pieces who patrol the board, and a jester locked in a cell who figured out that being in a game means the rules are optional. The Kingdom is ruled by King through fear and held together by the loyalty of Darkners who remember being used by Lightners and resent being abandoned. It is a world built from toys that became people and discovered that their creators forgot about them. The metaphor is not subtle and it doesn't need to be.

Appearance

A Dark World themed around playing cards and board games. Checkered floors, card-suit architecture, chess piece NPCs, and dungeons made of game boards. The color palette is dark blues, purples, and the bright primary colors of a card deck. The Great Board stretches across the landscape, and Card Castle looms at the far end. Everything has the logic of a game — because in this world, everything literally is one.
