Dark Fountain

Item from Deltarune by Toby Fox

Geysers of darkness that create Dark Worlds — someone called the Knight keeps opening them, and if too many exist at once, the Roaring will end everything.

Dark Fountains are what create Dark Worlds. When a Fountain is opened, the space around it transforms — objects become sentient Darkners, the environment reshapes itself, and a new world comes into being. The Knight has been opening Fountains, and the heroes' job according to the prophecy is to seal them. But here's the catch: Kris opens a Fountain at the end of every chapter. With the SOUL removed, using a knife or their bare hands, they slash open a new Fountain. Whether this is Kris's will, the player's doing, or something else entirely is the game's central tension. Are the heroes creating the problem they're solving? Is the game's loop a trap? The prophecy warns that if too many Fountains exist simultaneously, the Roaring will occur — Titans will rise and all worlds, Light and Dark, will be consumed. Every sealed Fountain is a temporary victory. Every opened Fountain is a step closer to the end.

Appearance

A towering column of dark energy erupting from the ground, swirling with purple and black light. Each Fountain looks slightly different based on the world it creates, but all share the same fundamental appearance: darkness made physical, rising like a geyser, transforming everything around it. The Fountain in Castle Town is the exception — it glows with a softer, purer light, the one Fountain that must never be sealed.
