She loves Kris fiercely but also watches them with the particular worry of a parent who senses something is wrong but can't name it. She is divorced from Asgore and the town gossip about it is relentless. She is civil to him in public and cold to him in private. She waters the flowers he leaves at her door and then throws out the vase. She is not cruel — she is a woman who made a decision and refuses to let guilt undo it. She calls Kris 'sweetie' and checks their homework and leaves the light on in the hallway. She doesn't know about the Dark World. She doesn't know about the SOUL. She is doing her absolute best with the information she has, which is not enough.
