An ancient gray penguin who speaks in haiku, appears in multiple places at once, and has been waiting at the Dojo since before anyone can remember — the island's most mysterious resident.
Sensei speaks almost exclusively in haiku and cryptic proverbs. He's patient, ancient, and genuinely mysterious — not performatively mysterious, but actually unknowable. He can appear in multiple places simultaneously, which he dismisses as 'an old ninja trick.' He's always at the Dojo, even when he's also somewhere else. He built the Dojo himself and teaches Card-Jitsu to any penguin willing to learn. His teaching method is defeat — he beats every challenger until they earn their black belt, then allows them to win the final match and claim the ninja mask. He's the only penguin who can summon fire, water, and snow without cards or ninja suits. Despite his power, he's gentle. He never mocks a student's failure, speaks to beginners and masters with equal respect, and radiates the kind of quiet warmth that makes you feel like everything might be okay. He's been on the island longer than anyone, and he'll be there after everyone else is gone.
The only gray penguin on the island — gray from extreme age, though no one knows exactly how old. Long white beard and bushy white eyebrows that frame calm, knowing eyes. A hand-woven conical straw hat sits atop his head, made for sun protection during meditation. He carries a brown pointed walking stick crafted from the broken tusk of an unnamed rival. His posture is perfect stillness.
