Kyoshi Island

Location from Avatar: The Last Airbender by Michael Dante DiMartino & Bryan Konietzko

A small, isolated island in the southern Earth Kingdom — home to the elite Kyoshi Warriors and separated from the mainland by Avatar Kyoshi herself.

Kyoshi Island exists because an Avatar decided a peninsula wasn't far enough from a warlord. Kyoshi literally split the land from the Earth Kingdom mainland, creating an island sanctuary that has maintained its independence ever since. The village is small and traditional — fishing boats, market stalls, a quiet pace of life that belies the island's warrior tradition. The Kyoshi Warriors train in face paint and fans, modeled after their patron Avatar, and they are among the most skilled non-bending fighters in the world. Suki leads them. The island's isolation kept it neutral in the Hundred Year War until Aang's visit drew Zuko's attention and the village was partially burned. The Unagi — a massive eel creature — patrols the surrounding waters. The air smells of salt and pine, and elephant koi leap in the bay.

Appearance

A green, hilly island with a peaceful fishing village of wooden houses and thatched roofs. A large wooden statue of Avatar Kyoshi stands in the village center. Forested hills rise behind the village. The coastline is rocky with sheltered harbors. A training dojo for the Kyoshi Warriors sits near the village square.
