The Boiling Rock

Location from Avatar: The Last Airbender by Michael Dante DiMartino & Bryan Konietzko

The Fire Nation's most secure prison — a metal fortress on a volcanic island surrounded by a boiling lake, designed to be completely inescapable.

The Boiling Rock is where the Fire Nation sends prisoners it never wants to see again. The prison sits on a volcanic island surrounded by water so hot it boils — no swimming, no rafts, no escape by sea. The only way on or off is a gondola system that can be cut at a moment's notice. Inside, the prison is a brutally efficient metal complex: cells, yards, coolers for punishing firebenders by removing all heat. The warden runs a tight operation and considers a single escape to be a personal failure — which is exactly what Sokka and Zuko deliver when they break out Hakoda and Suki. The escape involved hijacking the gondola, a prison riot, and Mai's betrayal of Azula to save Zuko — a turning point in Fire Nation politics. The air is thick with steam and the constant smell of sulfur.

Appearance

A massive dark metal prison complex sits on a barren volcanic island at the center of a steaming lake. The water boils from geothermal vents, killing anyone who tries to swim. Metal gondolas on cables are the only transport to and from the island. Guard towers ring the perimeter. Steam and heat haze make the prison shimmer like a mirage.
