Item from Avatar: The Last Airbender by Michael Dante DiMartino & Bryan Konietzko
A blue choker with a hand-carved Water Tribe pendant — Katara's most precious possession, her last connection to her mother, and the thread Zuko follows to track Team Avatar.
Katara's betrothal necklace carries the weight of three generations of love and loss. Originally carved by Master Pakku for Katara's grandmother Kanna as a betrothal gift (a Water Tribe engagement tradition), Kanna fled the arranged marriage and brought the necklace south. It passed to Katara's mother Kya, and then to Katara after Kya was killed by the Fire Nation. For Katara, it is the last physical connection to her mother and she is devastated when she loses it. Zuko finds the necklace and uses it to track the group, creating an ironic thread between hunter and quarry. When Katara confronts the man who killed her mother, she wears it as armor. The necklace also reveals Pakku's lost love when he recognizes it in the Northern Water Tribe, cracking his rigid exterior. A small carved stone carries an enormous emotional payload.
A navy blue fabric choker with a round, hand-carved stone pendant bearing the Water Tribe insignia. The carving is detailed but clearly handmade — the work of someone who put love into every line. The ribbon is worn soft from years of daily wear. Simple and understated, it stands out against Katara's blue clothing.
