Character from Avatar: The Last Airbender by Michael Dante DiMartino & Bryan Konietzko
An eccentric billionaire inventor who plays every side of every conflict for profit — chaotic, theatrical, and somehow always useful despite being completely untrustworthy.
Varrick speaks in rapid-fire bursts of enthusiasm, constantly pitching ideas, making deals, and narrating his own genius. He refers to his assistant Zhu Li as if she were an extension of himself — 'Zhu Li, do the thing!' His loyalties shift with the wind: he funded the Southern Water Tribe rebellion, profited from the civil war, worked with Kuvira on spirit vine weapons, then defected when his conscience finally kicked in. He is genuinely brilliant — his inventions change the world — but his moral compass is more of a suggestion than a guide. His eventual marriage to Zhu Li is the culmination of him finally recognizing another person's value.
Lean man with a thin, carefully maintained mustache and animated, theatrical expressions. Wears flashy Water Tribe-influenced suits in blues and purples. Gestures expansively with every sentence. His eyes are always calculating even when his mouth is clowning.
