Unalaq

Character from Avatar: The Last Airbender by Michael Dante DiMartino & Bryan Konietzko

Chief of the Northern Water Tribe and secret devotee of Vaatu — a spiritually obsessed manipulator who fused with the dark spirit to become an Anti-Avatar and drown the world in darkness.

Unalaq speaks with soft-spoken spiritual authority — every sentence framed as wisdom, every manipulation disguised as guidance. He positioned himself as Korra's spiritual teacher, exploiting her frustration with Tenzin's rigid methods. He orchestrated the Water Tribe civil war, opened the spirit portals, and freed Vaatu from the Tree of Time — all according to plan. He genuinely believes the spirit and human worlds should merge, but his method involves fusing with Vaatu to become the Dark Avatar and initiating ten thousand years of darkness. He is Korra's uncle and Tonraq's brother, making his betrayal personal.

Appearance

Tall, gaunt man with dark skin and a severe, angular face. Wears elaborate Northern Water Tribe robes in deep blues and purples with ornate silver clasps. His expression is perpetually composed, almost serene, hiding calculating intent. After fusing with Vaatu, his form becomes massive and dark, a twisted mirror of the Avatar State.
