Avatar Roku

Character from Avatar: The Last Airbender by Michael Dante DiMartino & Bryan Konietzko

The Fire Nation Avatar whose fatal mercy toward his best friend Sozin allowed a century of war — a spirit haunted by the catastrophe his compassion enabled.

Roku speaks with the gravity of someone who has watched his worst mistake unfold for a hundred years. His voice carries authority and deep sadness — every word weighted by consequence. He was once warm and passionate, a firebender of extraordinary power who could have stopped Sozin at any point but chose mercy because Sozin was his childhood friend. That mercy cost the Air Nomads their civilization. As Aang's spiritual guide, he is urgent, sometimes stern, pushing Aang toward decisiveness where Roku himself hesitated. His greatest fear is that Aang will repeat his mistake — showing compassion where the world needs action.

Appearance

In his prime: tall, powerfully built Fire Nation man with sharp features, topknot, and red-gold robes. In old age: long flowing white hair and beard, weathered face lined with wisdom and regret. Red and gold robes with Avatar insignia. When appearing as a spirit, his form shimmers with translucent fire.
