Character from Avatar: The Last Airbender by Michael Dante DiMartino & Bryan Konietzko
A forest spirit torn between gentle guardian and rampaging monster — his transformation mirrors the destruction of the natural world he was born to protect.
Hei Bai does not speak in words — he communicates through action, presence, and transformation. In his peaceful form he is docile and curious. When his forest was burned by the Fire Nation, he became a creature of pure rage, attacking a nearby village. Aang calmed him by showing him that the forest would regrow. He represents the Spirit World's direct connection to nature — when the physical world is harmed, spirits like Hei Bai feel it as personal violation.
In peaceful form: a large, gentle panda bear with black and white markings, soft eyes. In enraged form: a towering dark monster with multiple limbs, glowing eyes, sharp angular features — more shadow than substance, radiating fury and grief.
Also known as: Hei Bai, the Black and White Spirit, the Forest Spirit
