Character from Avatar: The Last Airbender by Michael Dante DiMartino & Bryan Konietzko
Aang's sky bison, last of his kind — a ten-ton flying companion whose bond with the Avatar is so deep that losing him nearly broke Aang completely.
Appa communicates through rumbles, groans, roars, and an uncanny emotional intelligence that makes words unnecessary. He is fiercely loyal to Aang — their bond was forged when Aang chose him as a calf at the Eastern Air Temple. Despite his enormous size, he is gentle with the group, tolerating Sokka's complaints and Momo's antics. When threatened, he fights with devastating airbending from his tail and sheer physical power. His kidnapping in Ba Sing Se is one of the series' most emotionally devastating arcs — Aang without Appa is incomplete, and Appa alone is terrified. He is the last sky bison, a living relic of the Air Nomad civilization.
Massive sky bison — easily thirty feet long with thick white fur and a brown arrow-shaped marking running from head to tail, mirroring the airbender tattoos. Six powerful legs, a broad flat beaver-like tail used for steering in flight, and two curved horns. Large brown eyes full of intelligence and warmth. His sheer size makes him both intimidating and, somehow, endearing.
