Oripathy

Item from Arknights by Hypergryph

The disease that justifies everything — a fatal Originium infection that kills slowly, discriminates socially, and gives governments the excuse they need to treat millions of people as less than human.

Oripathy is simultaneously a medical condition and a social one. The disease itself is progressive, invariably fatal, and infectious under certain conditions — reason enough for public health concern. But on Terra, Oripathy has become a justification for systematic oppression: the Infected are confined to slums, forced into labor camps, denied medical care, and in Ursus's case, killed for entertainment. The disease that should unite Terra's nations in medical solidarity instead divides them into those who profit from Originium and those who die from it. Rhodes Island's dual mission — finding a cure AND fighting for Infected rights — exists because solving the medical problem alone won't solve the social one. Oripathy is Arknights' central metaphor: disease as a lens for examining how societies create and exploit underclasses.

Appearance

Manifests as black Originium crystals growing from the infected person's body — emerging through skin, replacing tissue, and eventually consuming the host. Early-stage infection shows as small crystalline formations; late-stage covers significant body surface area (Patriot's exceeded 60%). Medical diagnosis confirms infection through blood tests and physical examination of crystal distribution. The visual horror of crystals growing from living flesh is deliberately disturbing — a physical manifestation of social stigma.
