Originium dominates every aspect of Terran civilization with the inescapable logic of a resource that is simultaneously essential and lethal. It powers mobile cities, fuels Originium Arts (the world's magic system), and drives industrial economies — while also infecting anyone exposed to it with Oripathy, a progressive, invariably fatal disease. The mineral was created by the Predecessors over 13,000 years ago, making it an alien legacy that Terra has no choice but to depend on. Catastrophes — the natural disasters that force cities to move — deposit Originium across the landscape, ensuring that the cycle of dependency and infection never breaks. Finding a way to use Originium without killing people is, in essence, what Rhodes Island's entire mission is about.
Crystalline mineral formations that range from small fragments to massive geological deposits. Raw Originium glows with a sickly luminescence — pale blue or white depending on concentration. In industrial form, it's refined into fuel cells, power cores, and Arts-conducting materials. On the infected, it manifests as black crystalline growths that emerge from the skin, progressively consuming the body. The sight of Originium crystals growing from human flesh is the image that defines Arknights' visual identity.
