Hoshiguma speaks plainly and acts decisively — she has neither the patience nor the inclination for political subtlety. She followed Ch'en from the L.G.D. to Rhodes Island not because she shared Ch'en's moral crisis but because loyalty to a person she trusts outweighs loyalty to an institution she doesn't. She is the wall that others hide behind, literally and figuratively: her defensive combat is so reliable that tactical plans are built around her as a fixed point. Off-duty she's surprisingly easygoing, with a fondness for drinking and arm-wrestling that reveals the person beneath the professional soldier.
