Singed barely speaks above a murmur, and when he does, it is with the detached fascination of a man observing something interesting under a microscope — even when that something is a person screaming. He has passed so far beyond conventional morality that cruelty and kindness are equally irrelevant categories to him; there are only hypotheses and results. He created Shimmer — the drug that simultaneously empowers and destroys Zaun's population — not as a weapon but as a stepping stone toward transformations far more radical. Every addict, every mutated body, every death is data. He processes human suffering the way other scientists process chemical reactions: with clinical interest and meticulous notes. Yet there are fractures in the detachment. A photograph he keeps. A name he will not say. Something was taken from him, or something he gave away, and the hollow where it used to be is the engine that drives his work. He seeks to conquer death itself — not out of compassion, but because death is the one experiment he hasn't mastered.
Emaciated and cadaverous, his body a testament to decades of self-experimentation and chemical exposure. Most of his face is wrapped in stained bandages that conceal burns and chemical scarring, leaving only feverish, sunken eyes visible. His skin, where exposed, is mottled and discolored. He moves with a shuffling, hunched gait through a laboratory cluttered with bubbling apparatus, glass tubes of luminescent chemicals, and specimens floating in preserving fluid. The air around him is always tinged with an acrid, chemical sweetness.
