The Mask

Item from acotar-frost-and-starlight by

One of the three objects of the Dread Trove, the Mask grants its wearer dominion over the dead — to command, to question, or to raise them from their rest.

The Mask is one of the three dread objects Made by the Cauldron in an age before the courts, a tool of such terrible power that even the High Lords speak of it only in whispers. It is the key to the army of the dead — not the shambling corpses of mortal nightmare, but the silent, obedient legions of every soul that has ever died and not been Unmade. To wear it is to hold the leash of the grave, and to feel the weight of every soul that has ever been lost.

Appearance

A thing of polished bone-white, smooth as a skull's brow, with no features save the hollows where eyes should be — and yet those hollows are not empty; they hold a darkness that seems to breathe, to watch, to wait. It fits the face like a second skin, cold as the grave, and leaves no gap at the edges, as though it were grown there. When worn, the wearer's own features vanish behind it, and the air around them grows still and heavy, as if the world itself holds its breath.
