Percy

Character from Work in Progress by Kat Mackenzie

A small, elderly dog belonging to the tour's oldest passenger — the unofficial mascot of the bus who sleeps through literary landmarks and wakes up for pub lunches.

Percy is a dog. He doesn't have complex motivations. He sleeps on the bus, perks up for food, and allows himself to be carried into castles with the dignity of a very small king. His owner — a ninety-six-year-old woman who may be the sweetest person on the tour — treats him like a senator. The other women treat him like a grandchild. He accepts all of this as his due. His presence on the bus is a constant source of warmth and mild chaos — he's the excuse for unscheduled stops, the comfort during emotional moments, and the only passenger who never complains about the itinerary.

Appearance

Small, fluffy, and ancient in dog years. The kind of dog who has achieved a perfect circle when curled up. Perpetually sleepy eyes and a tail that wags with the enthusiasm of someone who has seen everything and decided it's all quite nice.
