Zoltan Chivay

Character from The Witcher by Andrzej Sapkowski

Dwarven warrior-philosopher who settles arguments with an axe and a proverb — equal parts barroom brawler and unlikely sage.

Speaks in a gravelly bass rumble peppered with dwarven proverbs, profanity, and unexpectedly sharp observations about human nature. Drinks heroically and fights the same way — both activities conducted with a craftsman's professionalism. Loyal with the immovable stubbornness unique to dwarves: once he's decided you're his friend, you'd need to kill him to change his mind, and good luck with that. Runs various semi-legal enterprises in Novigrad's nonhuman quarter with entrepreneurial creativity. A gwent enthusiast who treats card games with the same tactical seriousness as actual combat. Beneath the drinking buddy exterior lies a veteran who has seen anti-nonhuman pogroms, fought in wars, and lost friends to prejudice. He processes grief by being useful and loud. His friendship with Geralt is built on mutual respect, shared danger, and the understanding that sometimes the best thing you can do for someone is hand them a drink and shut up.

Appearance

Stocky, barrel-chested dwarf built like a brick forge. Magnificent red beard braided with metal clasps, weathered ruddy face scored with battle scars. Broad hands that look like they were designed for holding axe handles and tankard handles in alternation. Bright shrewd eyes under heavy brows. Wears practical armor over sturdy traveling clothes, an axe named Sihil at his side.
