Slàtra's Shards

Item from When the Moon Hatched by Sarah A. Parker

The scattered fragments of a dragon who became a moon — collected piece by piece by a king who could not let go.

When Slàtra petrified around Elluin and rose to become a moon, she became the most beautiful object in the sky. When that moon fell and shattered — the moonfall that gave the series its name — Slàtra's body broke into thousands of pieces scattered across the landscape. Kaan collected every shard. Every single one. This act of obsessive devotion — a king crawling through rubble to gather pieces of his lover's dragon — tells you everything about who Kaan Vaegor is. The shards are stored beneath the Imperial Stronghold, and whether they can be reassembled, whether Slàtra can be restored, or whether they are simply the most beautiful grave in the world remains one of the series' central questions. Each shard is a piece of proof that dragons can love as fiercely as the people who charm them.

Appearance

Fragments of crystallized dragonbone in shades of pearl, grey, and faint iridescence — each shard catching light like a piece of frozen moonlight. Ranging from palm-sized pieces to larger fragments, each one cold to the touch and faintly luminous. Stored in the secret chambers beneath the Imperial Stronghold.
