Parchment Larks

Item from When the Moon Hatched by Sarah A. Parker

Magical paper birds that carry messages between people — including one named Nee that Raeve kept because even an assassin needs something gentle to hold.

Parchment larks are Ayrithia's communication system — magical origami birds that carry written messages across distances. They are commonplace enough that most people don't think twice about them, but they carry enormous emotional weight in this story. Kaan used parchment larks to send messages to Elluin. Raeve kept one — Nee — that was never meant for her, holding onto it the way a drowning person holds onto driftwood. When she released Nee after Essi's death, it was a symbolic severing. When Nee appeared again at the book's end — bloodied and damaged, landing in Kyzari's lap — the lark became a thread connecting the mother who doesn't remember to the daughter who doesn't know. A simple paper bird carrying the weight of an entire family's tragedy.

Appearance

Folded paper birds enchanted to fly and deliver messages. They flutter with surprising lifelike movement — folding and unfolding their wings, tilting their heads, perching on fingers and shoulders. Nee, the parchment lark Raeve kept, was originally sent to her by mistake and became a comfort object she carried everywhere.
