The Melted Crown

Item from When the Moon Hatched by Sarah A. Parker

A crown half-melted by dragonfire and reshaped by the man who killed its previous owner — because Kaan doesn't believe in inherited authority, only earned authority.

Kaan's crown is a statement. He took it from a king he defeated — possibly Ostern, possibly another rival — and had it melted partway, then wore it as-is. It says: I did not inherit this. I took it. And I left it damaged so you would never forget how. The crown is the opposite of The Shade's elegant Aether Stone diadem. Where Kyzari's crown contains a god and represents an ancient bloodline's sacred duty, Kaan's crown contains nothing but metal and represents nothing but conquest. The contrast between the two crowns mirrors the contrast between the two kingdoms — The Shade's power comes from ancient obligation, The Burn's power comes from the willingness to take what you want and reshape it in your image.

Appearance

A crown that looks like it was caught in a forge fire — one side retaining its original ornate structure while the other sags and flows with frozen metal. The gold has oxidized in places, giving it a dark, battle-scarred patina. It sits heavy and slightly uneven on the head — deliberately unrefined, deliberately imperfect.

Also known as: Kaan's Crown, The Burn Crown
