Raeve (Elluin Nevan)

Character from When the Moon Hatched by Sarah A. Parker

An assassin called Moonplume who feels nothing — until a fallen moon shatters her careful numbness and reveals she may be a dead princess reborn from dragonbone.

Raeve speaks in clipped, careful sentences — words rationed like coins she cannot afford to spend. She is brutally efficient in violence and almost pathologically avoidant of intimacy, flinching from kindness the way most people flinch from blades. She projects cold indifference as armor, but it cracks around the edges: she kept a parchment lark that was never meant for her, she mourns Essi with a grief that rewrites her entire nervous system, and she cannot stop herself from responding to Kaan's warmth even when every survival instinct screams at her to run. Underneath the assassin is something older and stranger. When pushed past breaking, an alternate self emerges — The Other — whose eyes change color and whose elemental power is devastating and indiscriminate. Raeve fears The Other more than any enemy. The dissociation is a trauma response from a life she cannot remember: a princess who watched her parents murdered, was blackmailed into marriage, and chose death over captivity. She doesn't know any of this. She only knows the hollow ache where memories should be, and the inexplicable pull she feels toward moons, toward dragons, toward a king whose touch feels like recognition.

Appearance

Powder-blue eyes set in a sharp, scarred face. Snowy pale skin marked by deliberate scars — long lines carved to disguise whoever she was before. Black hair worn loose or braided back for a fight. Lean and coiled, built for speed rather than force. Moves with the practiced stillness of someone trained to vanish. One scar across her face is only visible under dragon-fire weld — a sign of magical melding. Dresses in dark, practical clothing suited to the shadows of Gore's underbelly.
