King Ostern

Character from When the Moon Hatched by Sarah A. Parker

The Vaegor patriarch who murdered the Nevan royal family to seize The Shade — a crime whose consequences echo through every kingdom and every one of his children.

Ostern is the ghost in the machine of the entire Moonfall conflict. He murdered Elluin's parents — the Nevan rulers of The Shade — and installed his son Tyroth as puppet king. He blackmailed Elluin into marrying Tyroth by threatening Kaan, Veya, and Slàtra. Every tragedy in the story traces back to his ambition. He ruled through fear and strategic violence, treating his children as chess pieces and other kingdoms as territory to absorb. His legitimacy was military, not moral, and the resentment his half-son Arkyn carries is a direct product of Ostern's willingness to use people and discard them when their utility expired.

Appearance

An older man with the hard, weathered look of a king who built his dynasty on conquest rather than inheritance. Vaegor features at their most severe — all angles and authority.
