The Ways were grown (not built) by male Aes Sedai during the Breaking as a gift to the Ogier, connecting stedding across vast distances. They were safe for centuries until saidin's corruption spread to them, birthing Machin Shin — the Black Wind — a mindless entity that strips sanity and life from anything it catches. Waygates — the entrances — exist near every major city. Trollocs use the Ways for rapid troop movement, enduring Machin Shin's attacks through sheer numbers.
Stone paths floating in absolute darkness, lit by pale guideposts. Ramps and bridges connect islands of stone in a void that has no floor, ceiling, or walls. The paths themselves are safe — barely — but Machin Shin hunts anything that enters.
