Rhuidean

Location from The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan

The Aiel's holy city — where clan chiefs and Wise Ones walk through the glass columns and learn the truth about their people's past, a truth that breaks some and transforms others.

Rhuidean is where truth lives. The glass columns show anyone who enters them the complete history of the Aiel — including the fact that they were once pacifists sworn to the Way of the Leaf, not warriors. This truth breaks some clan chief candidates (they go mad or die) and transforms others into leaders strong enough to carry the knowledge. Rand entered the columns and saw the Aiel's history from the Breaking to the Age of Legends. Aviendha entered and saw the Aiel's possible future — destruction at Seanchan hands. The city is a mirror that shows you what you need to see, whether you want to see it or not.

Appearance

A city of impossible Age of Legends architecture preserved in the desert — soaring towers, glass-domed buildings, and streets designed for a civilization that no longer exists. The glass columns at its center show visions of the Aiel's true history. After Rand channeled, a lake appeared and the city began to live again.
