Item from The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan
A Seanchan leash for channelers — a silver collar-and-bracelet connected by a chain that gives the holder (sul'dam) complete control over the wearer (damane). The most controversial artifact in the series.
The a'dam is the foundation of Seanchan civilization — the tool that transforms channelers from potential threats into weapons of the state. A damane wearing an a'dam cannot channel independently, cannot disobey the sul'dam, and is gradually conditioned to think of herself as a trained animal rather than a person. The a'dam is the series' most morally charged object because the Seanchan genuinely believe leashing is benevolent — they view channelers as dangerous animals who need control for everyone's safety, including their own. Egwene's experience as a damane shaped her entire political career.
A silver collar connected by a leash to a silver bracelet. The collar goes on the channeler (damane), the bracelet on the controller (sul'dam). The connection is both physical and channeling-based — the damane cannot channel without the sul'dam's permission and feels pain if she disobeys.
