Character from The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan
A Forsaken general consumed by jealousy of Lews Therin — he seized Illian as his power base and fought the Last Battle as both the Dark One's servant and Lews Therin's personal rival.
Sammael was a great general in the Age of Legends who could never accept that Lews Therin was greater. His entire fall to the Shadow was driven by professional jealousy — he couldn't beat the Dragon on the battlefield, so he changed sides. Three thousand years later, the grudge is still fresh. He seized Illian because he needed a nation to rule, and he fortified it against Rand the way he'd fortify against any rival general. He was killed by Mashadar in Shadar Logoth, an anticlimactic end for a man who wanted an epic final confrontation with his rival.
Compact and muscular with a scar across his face from Lews Therin's attack in the Age of Legends — a scar he refuses to Heal because it feeds his grudge. He dresses as a military commander and carries himself with a soldier's bearing.
