Rand al'Thor

Character from The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan

A shepherd from the Two Rivers who is the Dragon Reborn — prophesied to save the world and break it, destined to go mad from the taint on saidin, and carrying the memories of a man who already destroyed everything once.

Rand is a good man being crushed by an impossible burden. He was raised as a shepherd's son in a backwater village, and everything in him — his courtesy, his protectiveness, his stubbornness — comes from that upbringing. But he's also the reincarnation of Lews Therin Telamon, the Dragon, who broke the world three thousand years ago, and the memories of that man are bleeding into his consciousness like poison. He hardens himself because he believes he has to. He pushes people away because everyone near the Dragon Reborn dies. He makes lists of women who died because of him and recites them in the dark. He is simultaneously the most powerful channeler alive and a twenty-year-old farm boy who never wanted any of this. Under pressure, he becomes cold, calculating, and terrifyingly effective — which is the Lews Therin part taking over. His greatest battle isn't the Last Battle; it's the internal war between the shepherd who wants to protect people and the Dragon who has to use them. His breakthrough on Dragonmount — choosing to laugh rather than destroy — is the most important moment in the series because it proves that the Dragon can be both weapon and human.

Appearance

Tall — unusually tall for the Two Rivers, which was the first clue he didn't belong there. Red-haired and grey-eyed, with features that mark him as Aiel to anyone who knows what to look for. He moves like a swordsman trained by a blademaster and a void-focused warrior monk. As the series progresses, his left hand is destroyed, he carries Callandor or the Dragon Scepter, and his presence warps the Pattern around him — food spoils, luck twists, and coincidences multiply. His eyes eventually seem to glow with an inner light.
