Mesaana was Saine Tarasind — a researcher denied access to the prestigious Collam Daan in the Age of Legends. She turned to the Shadow out of spite and discovered a talent for infiltration and corruption of institutions. She embedded herself in the White Tower, manipulated Elaida's administration, and worked to fracture the Aes Sedai from within. Egwene destroyed her in Tel'aran'rhiod, breaking her mind through sheer force of will in a confrontation where Mesaana tried to use an a'dam and Egwene simply refused to be controlled.
Deliberately nondescript when disguised — she operated within the White Tower as an Aes Sedai for years without detection. Her true appearance is unremarkable, which suited her methods perfectly.
