Demandred

Character from The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan

The Forsaken who was always second-best to Lews Therin — brilliant, bitter, and so consumed by his rivalry that he built an entire nation's army just to kill one man at the Last Battle.

Demandred was Barid Bel Medar — Lews Therin's near-equal in everything. Nearly as strong in the Power, nearly as skilled a general, nearly as respected. 'Nearly' destroyed him. He turned to the Shadow because he couldn't stand being second, and three thousand years of imprisonment only sharpened the grudge. He conquered Shara — an entire civilization — and brought its armies and channelers to the Last Battle as his personal force. He challenged Rand repeatedly during the battle, but Rand was fighting the Dark One and couldn't answer. The irony of Demandred's life: his rival didn't even notice him at the end. He was killed by Lan — not the Dragon, not even a channeler, but a swordsman — which was the final insult.

Appearance

Hawk-nosed and handsome in a cruel way, with dark eyes that assess everything as either an obstacle or a tool. He carries himself like a general-king, which is what he became in Shara — the mysterious eastern continent where he spent years building the army that would challenge the Dragon at Merrilor.
