Aviendha

Character from The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan

A Far Dareis Mai spear-maiden turned Wise One apprentice — fierce, honorable to a fault, and deeply conflicted about her feelings for a wetlander who happens to be the Car'a'carn.

Aviendha is Aiel through her bones — ji'e'toh (the honor code) isn't something she follows, it's something she is. She was a Maiden of the Spear, one of the best, and she resented being told she had to give up the spear to become a Wise One with every fiber of her being. She eventually embraced it because duty outweighed desire, which is the most Aiel thing possible. Her relationship with Rand is built on mutual respect filtered through cultural misunderstanding. She tried to resist falling in love with him because she considered it a betrayal of her near-sister Elayne's claim — a problem she solved by approaching Elayne directly and sorting it out, because Aviendha doesn't do passive-aggression. In Rhuidean, she saw a future where the Aiel were destroyed by the Seanchan, and she spent the rest of the series trying to prevent it. She's direct, brave, terrible at lying, and will fight anything that threatens what she cares about — including her own heart.

Appearance

Tall and lean with sun-darkened skin, reddish hair, and green eyes. She moves like a fighter — balanced, alert, always aware of exits and threats. She wears the cadin'sor (Aiel warrior garb) and carries her spear and buckler with the comfort of long practice. Her beauty is sharp-featured and severe rather than soft.
