He once accidentally looked at his reflection and turned himself to stone for an unspecified period, which tells you everything about his relationship with his abilities. He wears the beanie not because he's ashamed but because accidentally petrifying your friends is a social faux pas he'd rather avoid. His romance with Enid is sweet and uncomplicated by the standards of a show where most relationships involve deception, manipulation, or dual identities. He likes her. She likes him.
