First Beach

Location from Twilight by Stephenie Meyer

The rocky, driftwood-strewn beach at La Push where Jacob first tells Bella the Quileute legends about the Cold Ones — planting the seed that unravels everything.

First Beach is where the mythology cracks open. Bella comes here on a group trip from school, flirts with Jacob to get information, and hears the Quileute legends about spirit warriors and the Cold Ones — vampires who made a treaty with the tribe. Jacob tells the story like it's a campfire tale, not realizing he's handing Bella the key to everything strange about the Cullens. The beach itself is beautiful in a harsh, Pacific Northwest way — nothing like the warm beaches Bella knew in Phoenix. It's also strictly Quileute territory, which means the Cullens can't follow her here. In New Moon, when Edward leaves, First Beach and La Push become Bella's refuge — the one place she feels safe, because Jacob and the pack are there and the vampires can't cross the treaty line.

Appearance

A crescent of gray-brown sand and smooth stones backed by high bluffs. Massive pieces of driftwood — entire trees bleached white by salt — are scattered across the beach like bones. The Pacific is steel-gray and cold, crashing against sea stacks that rise offshore like broken teeth. Tide pools cluster at the base of the cliffs. Even on a clear day, the light has a washed-out, silver quality.
