Denali, Alaska

Location from Twilight by Stephenie Meyer

The vast Alaskan wilderness claimed by the Denali coven — the Cullens' closest allies and fellow 'vegetarian' vampires who hunt animals instead of humans.

The Denali territory is where the Cullen lifestyle was pioneered. Tanya, Kate, Irina, Eleazar, and Carmen live here as a coven that mirrors the Cullens in their commitment to hunting animals instead of humans. The two families consider themselves cousins — the closest thing to extended family that either has. The Denali wilderness is vast enough that a coven of vampires can hunt freely without drawing attention, and remote enough that their occasional lapses in human behavior go unwitnessed. Edward fled here when he first encountered Bella's scent, staying with the Denali coven while he wrestled with the temptation to kill her. Tanya's unrequited interest in Edward is a long-running source of family awkwardness. The territory becomes politically significant in Breaking Dawn when the Denali coven's alliance with the Cullens is tested by the Volturi threat — Irina's betrayal and death over the misidentification of Renesmee as an immortal child fractures the coven and nearly starts a war.

Appearance

Enormous. Snow-capped peaks, glacial valleys, boreal forest stretching to the horizon. The Denali coven's home is somewhere in this wilderness — a lodge-style house that looks like it belongs to wealthy outdoors enthusiasts rather than immortal predators. Aurora borealis paints the winter sky. The silence is absolute except for wind and the occasional wolf howl — real wolves, not shape-shifters.
