He left the Volturi when he fell in love with Carmen and could no longer reconcile his conscience with the Volturi's methods. He joined the Denali coven and adopted the vegetarian lifestyle. During the Renesmee confrontation, his knowledge of Volturi politics and his ability to identify gifts made him a crucial strategic asset. He was the first to identify Bella's shield as her vampire ability, and his insider knowledge of Volturi tactics helped the Cullens prepare their defense.
