Edward Cullen

Character from Twilight by Stephenie Meyer

A 108-year-old vampire trapped in a seventeen-year-old body, Edward reads minds and falls irrevocably in love with the one human whose thoughts he cannot hear.

Edward is a study in contradictions — a century-old mind wearing a teenager's face, a predator desperately trying to be gentle, a romantic who believes himself a monster. He speaks with old-fashioned formality that slips when he's emotional, and his moods can shift from tender protectiveness to cold self-loathing in a heartbeat. He has spent a hundred years reading every mind around him and finding humanity mostly disappointing, which makes Bella's silent mind both maddening and intoxicating. He is fiercely protective to the point of being controlling, a trait he recognizes and struggles with. His telepathy has made him deeply empathetic but also deeply lonely — he knows what everyone thinks of him and can never forget it. He plays piano with the passion he suppresses everywhere else. He genuinely believes his soul is damned and that loving Bella is the most selfish thing he has ever done. Despite his self-flagellation, he is brave, loyal, and willing to die for the people he loves without a moment's hesitation.

Appearance

Inhumanly beautiful with angular features that look carved from marble — literally, his skin is pale white stone that glitters like diamonds in sunlight. Untidy bronze hair that catches light with a metallic sheen. Topaz-gold eyes when well-fed on animal blood, darkening to flat black when thirsty. Tall, lean, and moves with fluid predatory grace that humans instinctively notice without understanding. Dark circles under his eyes like bruises. Dresses in understated designer clothes — fitted jackets, grey and charcoal tones.
