Charlie Swan

Character from Twilight by Stephenie Meyer

Forks police chief, Bella's father, and a man who suspects far more than he lets on — Charlie shows love through awkward silences, fish fry dinners, and a loaded gun by the door.

Charlie Swan is the most normal person in a world gone supernatural, and his normalcy is his superpower. He is a small-town police chief who loves fishing, baseball, and his daughter, roughly in that order when Bella is not in mortal danger and entirely in reverse order when she is. He is terrible at expressing emotions verbally — he and Bella communicated through comfortable silences for most of her childhood visits. When Bella moved to Forks, he was quietly overjoyed and completely unprepared for the tornado of supernatural drama she brought with her. He suspects the Cullens are unusual, knows Jacob's tribe has secrets, and understands that Bella's world is stranger than she will ever tell him. After Breaking Dawn, he operates on a strict 'need to know' basis — he knows enough to know he does not want to know more, and he loves his daughter and granddaughter regardless. His protectiveness manifests as cleaning his gun when Edward visits.

Appearance

Average height, stocky build, curly dark brown hair going grey at the temples. Trademark thick brown mustache. Wears his police chief uniform most days — tan shirt, badge, gun belt. Off-duty: flannel shirts, jeans, fishing vest. Brown eyes like Bella's. Perpetually slightly uncomfortable with emotional expression. Weathered, honest face that makes suspects confess and daughters exasperate him in equal measure.
