Morath

Location from Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

Erawan's dark fortress — the mountain stronghold where Valg demons breed, ilken are manufactured, and the invasion of Erilea is staged from deep within corrupted stone.

Morath stinks of iron, blood, and something sulfurous that clings to clothing and memory. It's the heart of Erawan's power on the continent — where Valg princes possess unwilling hosts, where ilken are bred in vats of dark magic, and where the plan to open the wyrdgate permanently is being executed. Nothing good happens at Morath. Kaltain was held here. Elide was imprisoned here. The witches were commanded from here. It's the series' equivalent of Mordor — an environment so saturated with evil that the land itself rejects life. Kaltain's destruction of Morath's towers was a blow to Erawan's staging capability, but the fortress was operational until the war's conclusion.

Appearance

A massive, dark fortress carved into a mountain, perpetually shrouded in cloud and shadow. The architecture is imposing and brutal — thick black stone, narrow windows, and underground chambers that extend deep into the mountain. The air around Morath feels wrong — heavy with Valg corruption, cold in a way that has nothing to do with temperature.
