China's premier scientific university in northwest Beijing — Wenjie's home both as a student and, decades later, as a quiet retired professor whose past is a state secret.
Tsinghua is two places at once. To the modern eye it is a calm, shaded campus of elite physicists and mathematicians, the Cambridge of China, where old professors walk slowly between buildings discussing problems set in the 1980s. To Wenjie's eye, in every doorway, it is also the campus where her father was beaten to death on a stage in front of his colleagues, where her mother screamed his denunciation, where her closest friend was paraded with high heels around her neck. For the present-day plot it is a place of conversations. Wang Miao goes there to interview Yang Dong's mother. He does not know who he is talking to.
A leafy campus of red-brick academic halls, willow-lined paths and pre-revolutionary archways, set behind a long wall in the Haidian district of Beijing. In 1966 the same paths are crowded with Red Guards, denunciation posters cover the walls, and a wooden platform has been erected in front of the physics building for struggle sessions.
