A wind-blasted summit in Inner Mongolia at the spine of the Greater Khingan Mountains, chosen for its altitude and isolation as the home of Red Coast Base.
Radar Peak is cold even in summer. The wind never quite stops; in winter it freezes the inside of the windows. From the dish platform on a clear night you can see no other lights — no village, no road, no neighbor. The base buildings are connected by covered walkways because crossing the open ground in a January storm could kill you. For the people stationed there it is a kind of spacious prison. For Wenjie, after the labor camp and the prison cell, it is the freest she has ever been: a room of her own with a window onto the sky.
A bald granite peak above the treeline, half-circled by a hairpin road and crowned by an enormous parabolic antenna whose dish is visible for kilometers. White-painted military buildings huddle below the dish on a leveled apron. Below that, the dark green wall of the Khingan forest stretches to the horizon in every direction.
