Yang Weining

Character from three-body-problem by

Chief engineer at Red Coast Base and once Ye Zhetai's experimental physics student — the man who recruited Wenjie out of prison, married her, and never realized she would kill him.

Yang is gentle and careful, the kind of man who solves disagreements by quietly doing what the other person needed before they had to ask twice. He chose experimental physics over theory specifically to stay out of political danger. He walks a very narrow line at Red Coast — answering to a political commissar he does not respect, running a project whose true purpose is not even shared with the engineers running it. He loves Wenjie in his own muted way. He recruited her out of prison because he could not stand to see his old teacher's daughter destroyed, and he kept her at Radar Peak partly because he had nowhere else to put her where she would be safe. He married her, fathered Yang Dong with her, and trusted her completely. He does not realize that the instant he discovers what she has been transmitting, she will reach for a length of conduit and end him.

Appearance

A square-shouldered army engineer in his thirties, hair cropped to regulation, glasses with thick black frames. Wears the standard PLA uniform on duty and a thicker padded coat over it for the wind on Radar Peak. Carries himself with the slightly uncertain politeness of a theorist who chose engineering because, as he says, you cannot make ideological mistakes when your job is to make a thing work.
