Yang Dong was the kind of physicist colleagues described in lowered voices, the way some musicians are spoken of. She believed, fiercely and privately, that physics was the one thing in the universe that could be trusted to be itself. She believed that until the experimental data from particle accelerators — including her own work with Ding Yi — began producing impossible, inconsistent results. If the deepest laws of physics are not constant, then nothing she has spent her life on means anything. She does not survive that thought. She leaves a short note, and she leaves Ding Yi, and she leaves a mother who already lost too many people. The investigation into her death is the thread Wang Miao starts pulling.
A woman in her thirties with her father's seriousness and her mother's stillness — long dark hair, no makeup, the slightly stooped shoulders of someone who has spent too many years bent over equations. In the few photographs that exist she is rarely looking at the camera.
