Wei Cheng was a mathematics prodigy whose interest in everything except mathematics burned out around the age of twenty. He married Shen Yufei because she let him keep working. He runs an HP RX8620 workstation worth more than a million yuan in his bedroom and spends his days attacking the three-body problem with evolutionary algorithms, simulated annealing, anything he can think of. He has gotten further than he has any right to. He is not political. He is not religious. He does not understand his wife's faith and he does not understand why people from the Frontiers of Science keep visiting his house, but he tolerates them because they let him work. When everything finally comes apart he is the one who picks up his wife's gun, kills her, and then walks down the hill to find someone to confess to. He talks like a man recounting a long, mildly interesting dream.
A man around forty with the look of a staid, honest intellectual gone slightly to seed — uncombed hair, slept-in clothes, perpetually unshaven. Spends most of the day in a small upstairs room with the door half-open. Greets visitors absentmindedly, then disappears.
