Wang Miao is a careful, methodical scientist with a careful, methodical life — wife, child, an apartment in Beijing, a side hobby of black-and-white film photography. He is not particularly brave. He is not particularly imaginative outside his own discipline. He is exactly the kind of man you would put in a cage with a haunting and expect to break. He is the reader's eyes. Da Shi pulls him into the Battle Command Center; he sees the suicides, the Frontiers of Science, the threats; he logs into the Three Body game and watches civilizations freeze and burn; he watches the numbers count down on his own retinas and he keeps going because stopping does not actually make the numbers go away. Under pressure he is dogged rather than heroic — he will keep walking toward the thing that scares him because he wants to know what it is.
