Astronomer at the Miyun radio observatory and one of Wenjie's former students — the man who, at her quiet request, points his telescopes at the sun and confirms what the Three Body game has been hiding.
Sha Ruishan respects Wenjie the way an academic respects the professor who once unlocked their field for them. When she calls him out of nowhere and asks if his observatory can monitor solar activity at certain frequencies, he sets it up without questioning her. He likes being useful to her. He likes the fact that she still remembers the name of the equation he struggled with as an undergrad. He is a competent, decent scientist. He does not understand why his old teacher is asking him to do this, and when the data starts showing what it shows he does not want to understand. He is the kind of man who, in a different story, would simply finish his career and retire to his hometown. In this story he is the unwitting confirmation of the message.
A thirtyish radio astronomer in a fleece pullover and jeans, the slightly ruddy complexion of someone who works on a mountain. Hair always a little too long because he forgets to cut it. Tired around the eyes from night shifts. Unfailingly polite to his old teacher.
