Pan Han

Character from three-body-problem by

Celebrity biologist, founder of the Pastoral China commune, and ETO Adventist whose public crusade against technological progress is a cover for an organization that wants the technology to come from somewhere else entirely.

Pan Han built his fame on accurate doom-prophecy. He predicted the birth defects from long-term consumption of genetically modified foods. He predicted the ecological disasters of GM crop cultivation. His predictions were so specific and so consistently right that there were rumors he came from the future — and within the ETO he might as well have, since the prophecies were Trisolaran-supplied. He runs Pastoral China, an experimental commune of three thousand permanent members who live entirely on urban trash inside a major Chinese city. He believes — or says he believes — that technological progress is a cancer in human society and must be excised. Within the ETO he is an Adventist: he wants the human disease to end, full stop. He is the public face of a movement whose private face is alien.

Appearance

A trim, intense man in his forties with the deliberate plainness of a public figure who has built a personal brand on rejecting consumerism. Wears organic linen in earth tones. The kind of beard that looks slightly unkempt and is in fact carefully maintained.

Also known as: Dr. Pan
